Rome – L’American Academy in Rome ha il piacere di presentare una serie di letture e conversazioni sulla vita e le opera di Ovidio, eventi che si terranno nel corso di due serate alla Casa delle Letterature ed all’American Academy in Rome, che ospiterà nel mese di Maggio 2013, il Premio Nobel Seamus Heaney in qualità di poeta in Residenza. La meravigliosa traduzione di Heaney del mito di Orfeo ed Euridice sarà il nucleo centrale di questi due giorni di celebrazioni, organizzate da Karl Kirchwey, FAAR’95, Direttore degli Arti dell’American Academy. Per l’occasione si riuniranno poeti, studiosi, scrittori, drammaturghi e traduttori per parlare dell’eredità letteraria di Ovidio.

La prima sera, il 9 maggio 2013, presso la Casa delle Letterature, si aprirà con una conversazione fra Stephen Greenblatt, Christopher Martin, e Ramie Targoff, sul tema del rapporto tra Shakespeare e Ovidio. Seguiranno letture de Le Metamorfosi in latino dello studioso Alessandro Schiesaro e letture del poeta Seamus Heaney, della poetessa Alice Fulton, del drammaturgo inglese Timberlake Wertenbaker e della scrittrice Jane Alison, gli stessi leggeranno loro traduzioni e riadattamenti dei versi di Ovidio dedicati a Daphne e Apollo, Orfeo e Euridice, Tereo, Procne e Filomela, Salmacis e Ermafrodito. Seguirà una discussione a chiusura.

La seconda serata, il 10 maggio 2013 presso l’American Academy in Rome, a Villa Aurelia, si aprirà con letture da novelle che hanno come soggetto la personale mitica ascesa e caduta del poeta latino, oltre a letture di The Love-Artist di Jane Alison, An Imaginary Life di David Malouf e The Last World di Christoph Ransmayr. Il poeta Frank Bidart, lo scrittore James Lasdun, e la professoressa e scrittrice Marina Warner parteciperanno ad una seconda serie di letture tratte da Le Metamorfosi che includeranno anche i racconti di Cinira e Mirra, La Peste a Egina, e Leto, Diana ed Apollo. A conclusione letture in latino dello studioso Philip Hardie e a seguire una conversazione finale.

Eventi Correlati: L’8 Maggio presso la galleria dell’American Academy in Rome verrà inaugurata la mostra dell’artista americana Wendy Artin che trae ispirazione dalla pubblicazione della Arion Press di San Francisco nel 2012 di Stone From Delphi.

Il 16 Maggio Seamus Heaney terrà presso l’American Academy l’unica lettura pubblica delle sue poesie in programma.

L’American Academy, fondata nel 1894 e riconosciuta come istituzione privata con un Atto del Congresso del 1905, si sostiene con donazioni di privati cittadini, fondazioni, aziende e con finanziamenti offerti dai National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities. Delle oltre trenta accademie straniere presenti a Roma, l’American Academy è l’unica a non essere sostenuta interamente dal suo governo, dipendendo prevalentemente dalle donazioni private.

Rome – The American Academy in Rome is pleased to announce a series of readings and conversations to explore the life and work of the great Latin poet Ovid, which will take place over the course of two evenings at the Casa delle Letterature and the American Academy in Rome.

The American Academy will welcome Nobel laureate poet Seamus Heaney as the William B. Hart Poet-in-Residence in May 2013 and it is Heaney’s beautiful translation of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice that provides the nucleus for this two-day literary celebration, organized by Andrew Heiskell Arts Director Karl Kirchwey, FAAR’95.

The events gather eminent poets, scholars, fiction writers, playwrights, and translators together to discuss Ovid’s enduring legacy.

The first evening, at the Casa delle Letterature, will commence with a conversation between Stephen Greenblatt, RAAR’10, Christopher Martin, and Ramie Targoff, RAAR’13, on the relationship between Shakespeare and Ovid. Scholar Alessandro Schiesaro will then read briefly from Ovid in Latin. Poet Seamus Heaney, author/poet Alice Fulton, British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker and fiction writer Jane Alison will join in a series of readings from The Metamorphoses and from their own translations and re-imaginings of Ovidian verses on Daphne and Apollo, Orpheus and Eurydice, Tereus, Procne and Philomela, and Salmacis and Hermaphroditus. A closing discussion will follow.

The second evening at the American Academy in Rome’s Villa Aurelia will commence with readings from novels that take as their subject the Latin poet’s own mythic rise and fall, including Jane Alison’s The Love-Artist, David Malouf’s An Imaginary Life, and Christoph Ransmayr’s The Last World. Poet Frank Bidart, writer James Lasdun, and writer/professor Marina Warner will then participate in a second series of readings from The Metamorphoses, including the tales of Cinyras and Myrra, The Plague at Aegina, and Leto, Diana, and Apollo. Scholar Philip Hardie will read briefly from Ovid in Latin before a final conversation among the participants.

Seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Simultaneous translation will be available for the conversations.

Related Events: On May 8th the AAR Gallery will open an exhibition based on the Arion Press fine arts letterpress edition, Stone From Delphi, which features Heaney’s poems on classical subjects and the watercolors of American artist and AAR Arts Advisor Wendy Artin.

On May 16th Seamus Heaney will give his only public poetry reading at the American Academy in Rome.

The American Academy in Rome
Established in 1894 and chartered by an Act of Congress in 1905, the American Academy in Rome is a leading center for independent studies and advanced research in the arts and humanities. Situated on the Janiculum, the highest hill within the walls of Rome, the Academy today remains a private institution supported by gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations, and the memberships of colleges, universities, and arts and cultural organizations as well as by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Each year, through a national competition, the Rome Prize is awarded to approximately thirty individuals working in ancient, medieval, Renaissance and early modern, or modern Italian studies, and architecture, landscape architecture, design, historic preservation and conservation, literature, musical composition, or visual art. The application deadline is November 1st. The Academy community also includes a select group of Residents, distinguished artists and scholars invited by the Director, as well as Affiliated Fellows, and Visiting Artists and Scholars.
